Shale gas increases 15 times the radiation exposure from radon

PHE report, the most comprehensive assessment ever made of the risks to health posed hydraulic fracturing, believes that further research is needed to monitor the level of shale gas radon in homes and exploitation of groundwater near the method hydraulic fracturing.

According to Sky News, research conducted in the U.S. where hydraulic fracturing is commonly used, have shown that the risks that this technology has on public health are reduced if wells are drilled and maintained correctly.

Currently available data show that the potential risks to public health from exposure to radiation related to shale gas extraction are low if operations are managed properly and well regulated, “said Dr. John Harrison for PHE .

Some people in the U.S. living near shale gas exploitation complained of headaches and skin diseases, but PHE appreciate that evidence that these problems had been caused by the use of hydraulic fracturing do not exist.

Another study on this subject showed that it is also unlikely ground water contamination in the hydraulic fracturing process.

The two main risks identified are surface spills and leaks during installation drill. These risks can be significantly reduced by developing a strong regulatory framework, “said , in turn, Quentin Fisher, a professor at the University of Leeds.
