In 2012, 22.9 % of gross energy consumption was from renewable sources such as wind farms and solar projects, as from 16.8 % in 2004. Target country is to have 24 % of energy from renewable sources by 2020. Objective to be achieved by 2020 for the EU 28 is a 20% share of renewable energy use in gross final consumption of energy.
It remains to be seen whether Romania will reach this target as the support scheme for renewable energy producers changed from earlier this year.
Guven decided that wind energy producers to receive, from 1 January 2014, only 1.5 green certificates for each MWh of energy delivered to consumers. Moreover, in the period 2014-2017, they will receive only 1.5 green certificates for each MWh of energy supplied to consumers, and after 2018 will receive 1.25 of green certificates.

The share of renewable energy has increased in all Member States, but the largest increases between 2004 and 2012 were in Sweden, Denmark and Austria. Sweden has increased from 38.7 % in 2004 to 51.0 % in 2012, Denmark, from 14.5 % to 26.0 % and from 22.7 % to 32 % Austria.
