How many forests has lost the planet in early 2000

Progress in reducing deforestation the actions in Brazil were better than in Indonesia, Malaysia, Paraguay and Angola.

The map was created by a team from the University of Maryland and could be achieved by a single computer in 15 years, but using Google Earth was made in a few days, says Matthew Hansen, coordinator of the team.

The losses of forested surfaces were built between 2000 and 2012 to 2.3 million square kilometers because of illegal logging, fires, diseases and storms. The planet also gained 800,000 square kilometers of forest in the same period.

Brazil has the best score, reducing the loss by half between 2003-2004 and 2010-2011. But Indonesia had the largest increase in deforested area, doubling its annual loss and thus reaching 20,000 square kilometers in 2011-2012.

Paraguay, Malaysia and Cambodia have the largest national forest loss. In total rainforests grow by 2,100 square kilometers a year, as the researchers show.
