Energy storage, solar industry secret of success in Germany

Friday, June 6, between 13 o'clock and 14 solar photovoltaic systems in Germany had to generate a record of 24.24 GW. The real record would come three days later when they supplied 50.6% of the nation's electricity, which shows the potential of solar technology in Germany.

The current reality is that solar energy contributed only 6% of the nation's electricity in the first five months of 2014, but this will change. The secret? Energy storage.

Rather than rely on the utility grid, some users to store solar energy and use only the excess network, and then take the batteries solar energy network are exhausted. Almost 7,000 of these battery systems were installed in Germany in 2013.

Tobias Rothacher, renewable energy expert at Germany Trade & Invest is expected to increase sales of these systems and the price of the batteries to fall, writes Clean Technica.

"As the cost of PV electricity is significantly lower than the price of energy in the network (price € 0.15 instead of € 0.30 PV energy from the network), customers want to use as high a proportion of electricity from photovoltaic systems.

If only they would feed electricity to the grid, they would receive feed-in tariff incentives for about € 0.13 – which means that the self-consumption of energy from PV systems worth twice as much as the energy input network, "explains Tobias Rothacher.

Solar panels on the roof get only 30-35% of the energy they produce, and their excess electricity in network reach. Well, any owner to add a battery system automatically created a system that could get twice as much power (60-70%) for annual consumption in the home.

"From now on, any new solar system will be installed in Germany will increase the need for energy storage solutions," Rothacher references. "The cost of storage will decrease in the coming years and this means that storage is not only becoming more necessary – it is also becoming more attractive from a financial perspective."

Regarding the large-scale energy storage, the government introduced in 2011 a program for financing of 200 million euros to support storage projects based on various technologies. Since then, several such large-scale storage projects have been completed and are exploited in order to gain experience and develop technologies.

On sunny days, more than 1.4 million photovoltaic systems in Germany currently feeds surplus energy to the grid, but this number will increase.

"The potential of PV self-consumption energy directly is about 74 TWh per year, which would require potential PV installed capacity of approximately 100 GWP," Rothacher said. "German PV market could grow further only energy storage – taken together, all the roofs and facades of PV in Germany could provide an installed capacity of 200 GWP".

The expert stressed that Germany's solar potential was demonstrated in the first two weeks of June. "From now on, any newly installed solar system in Germany will increase the need for energy storage solutions."
