gas<\/span><span>.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Tens of millions of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">tons of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">hydrogen<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are produced each<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">year;<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">industrial<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">hydrogen<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">is<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">important<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in petroleum refining<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and the production of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">fertilizers.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Thomas<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Jaramillo<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">professor of chemical engineering<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">associate<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">researcher<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Jakob<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Kibsgaard<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">want to use<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">electrolysis<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to produce<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">H2<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">from water<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in this process<\/span><span>, store<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">solar energy,<\/span> all <span class=\"hps\">shown<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">on<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the University website<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Electrolysis<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">learned<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in school<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">is simple<\/span><span>: introduce<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">two<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">metal electrodes<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in water<\/span><span>, and when<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">electricity is<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">passed through<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">these electrodes<\/span><span>, they<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">as a catalyst<\/span><span>, transforming the<\/span>&nbsp;<\/span><span lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">molecules in&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">water<\/span> in&nbsp;<span class=\"hps\">bubbles<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en\"> <span class=\"hps\">of hydrogen and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">oxygen gas<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span class=\"hps\">Platinum<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">is the best<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">catalyst for<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">hydrogen production<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">by water electrolysis<\/span><span>.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">But to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">do<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">electrolysis<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">industrially<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to be found<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">first<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">electrode<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">cheaper.<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">&quot;<\/span><span>We tried to make<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">pure hydrogen<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in the most efficient<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">way possible<\/span> beyond<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">just<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">using<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">electrolysis<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to replace<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">current market<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">demand<\/span><span> of <\/span><span class=\"hps\">hydrogen<\/span><span>.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span class=\"hps\">Currently<\/span><span>, there is no<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">effective way to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">store<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">solar energy<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">on<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a large scale.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Researchers at<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Stanford<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">believe that<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">electrolysis<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">could turn<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">water tanks<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in batteries<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">for storing<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">solar energy.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">During the <span class=\"hps\">be used<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">during the night.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Electrolysis<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">uses<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">electricity<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to separate<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">forming<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">chemical bonds<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">water.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Separation of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">chemical bonds<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">water<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">produces a<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">hydrogen<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">ion<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">&#8211;<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a proton<\/span> <span <span class=\"hps\">space<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to stick<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">until it<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">joins with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">an electron<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to form<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a hydrogen<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">on the catalyst surface<\/span><span>, and later<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to merge with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">neighboring<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">hydrogen atom<\/span><span>, forming<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">eventually<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">pure hydrogen<\/span><span class=\"hps\">.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">The secret<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">is to find<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a catalyst<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with a<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">good<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">viscosity<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">free.<\/span><span>&quot;<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Platinum is<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">perfect, but<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">expensive.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Last year<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">engineers<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">have<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">discovered that<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">an alternative<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Stanford<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">molybdenum sulphide<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a catalyst<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">widely used<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">petrochemical<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">processing<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">some of the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">sulfide<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the appropriate<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">properties<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to serve<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">as a<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">cheap solution<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">but effective<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">The teacher<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">explained that<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">petrochemical<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">processing<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">has similarities<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">electrolysis.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">That&#39;s because<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">oil<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">feed<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">stocks<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">such as<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">oil sands<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">contain<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a significant proportion<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">heavy<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">molecules<\/span><span>.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Oil<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">refineries<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">use<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of catalytic<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">reactions<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">involving<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">hydrogen<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">separate the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">heavy<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">molecules<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">into<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">lighter<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">molecules<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">such<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">as gasoline<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Similarly<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">electrolysis<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">involves<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the separation of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">molecules<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">water or<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">breakage of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">chemical bonds<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">thereof<\/span><span>.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">As the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">engineers at<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Stanford<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">have tried<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to improve<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">their<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">discovery<\/span><span>, they found<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a better way<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to produce<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">hydrogen<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">from water<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">inspiration from<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the petrochemical industry.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Oil processing<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">often involves<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">cleaning<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">sulfur from<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">fuels<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to reduce<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">acid rain.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">During this<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">cleaning process<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a portion of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the sulfur atoms<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are incorporated<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in the composition of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the catalysts<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">involved<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in the processing of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">petroleum<\/span><span>, increasing<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the activity of these<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">catalysts.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span class=\"hps\">Thus<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">engineers<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">have been<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">added<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">sulfur atom<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of molybdenum<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">phosphide<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">called<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a catalyst<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">known<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">speed up the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">production<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">property of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">hydrogen<\/span><span>.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Adding<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">sulfur<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">atom<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">created a new<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">catalyst<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">&#8211;<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">molybdenum<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">phosphosulfide<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">which<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">was more effective<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">at<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">producing<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">hydrogen<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">than its predecessor.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>\t<span lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">The new<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">catalyst<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">is more durable<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">extremely important<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">quality<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in an<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">industrial process in which<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the electrode<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">must work<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">out<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">daily<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">without<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">spoiling<\/span><span>, like<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">platinum.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Catalysts<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">developed by<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Kibsgaard<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Jaramillo<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">have<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a major advantage<\/span><span>.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">As<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the electrodes<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">very<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">stable<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">with a yield<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">close to that of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">platinum<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Now<\/span><span>, the research team<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">is trying to improve<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the new<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">catalyst.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">For example<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">want to bring<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">metal<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">small<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">nano<\/span><span>-scale<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">efficiently<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">catalyze<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the reaction.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Other<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">initiatives include<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">its integration into<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">prototypes<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">for future<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">energy storage<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">systems<\/span><span>.<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">The idea<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">would be to use<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">electrolysis<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of water<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to store<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">solar energy<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">during the day,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">as<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">pure hydrogen<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and then<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">at night<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">to<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">recombine<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">hydrogen and oxygen<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">into water<\/span><span>,<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">producing<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">electricity<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in this process<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span class=\"hps\">Jaramillo<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">said the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">preliminary<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">results of the experiment<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">scientific paper<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">can be<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">implemented in<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">clean energy<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">strategies<\/span><span>, but they<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">are based<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">on ideas<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">borrowed from<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the petrochemical industry.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n\t<span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span
