\n\tWhen it comes to<\/span> smoking,<\/span> there are few who<\/span> find<\/span> positive<\/span> sides<\/span> of this<\/span> vice.<\/span> However, experts<\/span> in green technologies<\/span> in South Korea<\/span> have<\/span> found<\/span> a benefit of<\/span> cigarette<\/span> –<\/span> filter can be<\/span> turned into a<\/span> powerful battery<\/span> for storing<\/span> energy from renewable sources<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAccording to a<\/span> paper published<\/span> in the journal<\/span> Nanotechnology<\/span>,<\/span> quoted<\/span> rtcc.org<\/span>,<\/span> cigarette<\/span> filters<\/span> can be<\/span> converted into a<\/span> carbon-based<\/span> material<\/span>, high performance<\/span>,<\/span> one<\/span> that fits perfectly<\/span> for<\/span> energy storage<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tStorage devices<\/span> is a great challenge<\/span> in<\/span> renewable energy<\/span> industry<\/span> because<\/span>, unlike<\/span> fossil fuels,<\/span> wind and solar power<\/span> can<\/span> generate electricity<\/span> only<\/span> intermittently.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tRecycling<\/span> cigarette butts<\/span> has<\/span> a double advantage<\/span> –<\/span> offers<\/span> a new solution<\/span> to the problem of<\/span> energy storage<\/span> while<\/span> preventing<\/span> environmental pollution.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t"<\/span>Our study<\/span> showed that<\/span> cigarette<\/span> filters<\/span> can be transformed<\/span> into a<\/span> high performance<\/span> material<\/span> carbon<\/span> using a<\/span> simple process that<\/span> simultaneously provides<\/span> a<\/span> green solution<\/span> for meeting<\/span> energy<\/span> needs<\/span> of society,<\/span>"<\/span> said Professor<\/span> Yi<\/span> Jongheop<\/span> Seoul National<\/span> University<\/span>,<\/span> coauthor of the study<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAs explained<\/span> filters<\/span> to store<\/span> potential<\/span> energy.<\/span><\/strong><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAround<\/span> 5,600<\/span> billion<\/span> cigarette butts<\/span> are discarded<\/span> into the environment<\/span> each year<\/span>,<\/span> most of<\/span> them being<\/span> found<\/span> after cleaning the<\/span> beaches.<\/span> They contain<\/span> chemicals that<\/span> cause<\/span> cancer,<\/span> such as pesticides<\/span> and<\/span> nicotine.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \n<\/p>\n

\n\tOnce<\/span> fired<\/span>, the cigarette<\/span> is<\/span> changed into<\/span> a material which<\/span> is composed<\/span> by a number of<\/span> small pores<\/span> which gives<\/span> the area<\/span> the ability<\/span> to<\/span> store<\/span> large amounts of energy<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe<\/span> filters can be<\/span> used to cover the<\/span> electrodes<\/span> supercapacitors<\/span> –<\/span> electrochemical<\/span> components<\/span> used to<\/span> store large amounts of<\/span> electrical power<\/span> –<\/span> resulting in a<\/span> highly efficient<\/span> battery<\/span>,<\/span> which may<\/span> be integrated into<\/span> computers<\/span>, mobile phones and<\/span> electrical<\/span> vehicles<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \n<\/p>\n

\n\tUsing<\/span> cigarette<\/span> filters<\/span> energy storage<\/span> would,<\/span> of course<\/span>,<\/span> lower<\/span> production costs.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n
