Several cash-strapped EU countries are cutting subsidies for renewable energy. And governments around the world have failed to make progress towards a new global climate-change treaty. Betting against tough climate policies seems almost prudent.&rdquo;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\">&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; The Economist also said that fossil fuel firms should explain how their activities are compatible with government emissions targets. &ldquo;But so long as governments are ambivalent about those targets, it seems fruitless to demand more of companies and markets. At the moment neither public policies nor markets reflect the risks of a warmer world.&rdquo;<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\">&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; News of, and reaction to, the report &ndash; Unburnable Carbon 2013: Wasted Capital and Stranded Assets &mdash; has also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carbontracker.org\/media-coverage-unburnable-carbon-2013\">appeared<\/a> in The New York&nbsp; Times, the Guardian, Sydney Morning Herald, Bloomberg News, BBC and Financial Times.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Quoting from the report, which was written by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carbontracker.org\/wastedcapital\">Carbon Tracker<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.lse.ac.uk\/GranthamInstitute\/Home.aspx\">Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change<\/a>, The Economist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/business\/21577097-either-governments-are-not-serious-about-climate-change-or-fossil-fuel-firms-are\">editorial<\/a> noted that the report said a lot of fossil fuel reserves would have to remain in the ground if global temperatures are not to rise more than 2&deg;C, the limit most scientists suggest as safe for humankind.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-family:tahoma,geneva,sans-serif;\">&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; &ldquo;Existing fossil-fuel reserves already contain far more carbon than that,&rdquo; The Economist said. &ldquo;According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), in its &lsquo;World Energy Outlook,&rsquo; total proven international reserves contain 2,860 GTCO2 &mdash; almost three times the carbon budget.
