Romanian Turkish citrus and apples contain the most pesticides, according to the annual monitoring of pesticides in Romania conducted by the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority ( ANSVSA ) for 2012.
Of 3,367 samples analyzed , which included fruits, vegetables, grains, cereal baby food and animal products, 839 (25%) contained residues of pesticides, and 31 (0.9 %) were above the amounts of pesticide permissible by law.
Even more, some products analyzed (417 of them) were more types of pesticides :
Apples – had the composition between 2 and 7 kinds of pesticides. We have analyzed 29 samples of apple, of which 17 ( 58.62 %) were Romanian.
Grapefruit – 72 samples, the number of pesticides – between 2 and 5, 60 specimens (83.3 %) from Turkey.
Lemons – 88 samples , the number of pesticides – between 2 and 5, 80 of them (90.9 %) were Turkish.
Mandarins – 47 samples, the number of pesticides – between 2 and 5, 41 of them ( 89.36 % ) came from Turkey.
Orange – 23 samples, the number of pesticides – between 2 and 5, 11 of them ( 47.82 %) were Turkish.
Tomatoes – 30 samples, the number of pesticides – between 2 and 5, 21 of them ( 70 % ) were Turkish.
Grapefruit – the most toxic
The pesticides most frequently detected in the ANSVSA authorities were methidathion, imazalil, thiabendazole, chlorpyrifos and pyrimethamil. The highest concentrations found were those of imazalil in grapefruit – of 21,200 mg / kg.
Organic baby food containing pesticide
ANSVSA report has considered and analysis of pesticides and baby food cereal. 10 of 11 samples of such food classified as ” organic ” or ” organic ” contains pesticides, the level of pesticides was below the maximum allowed in the EU. Samples analyzed were from Austria, Germany, Poland, Portugal and Spain ( the most).
Apples and lettuce in Romania may contain pesticides above the maximum allowed.
Latest EU report which centralized all EU Member States reporting was conducted in 2010. They look like apples and lettuce coming from Romania contained amounts of pesticides above the maximum allowed in the EU.
Moreover, in 2010, Romania found 26 food samples exceeded the maximum level of pesticide – 0.73% . National reporting last year show an increase (0.9 %).
How many organic foods in Europe contain excessive pesticide.
The same EU report in 2010 analyzed 3,571 samples of organic food, organic in 28 states.
0.9% of fruit and nuts ( almonds, walnuts , hazelnuts , etc.). Organic or bio (compared to 2.9%) contained amounts of pesticides above the maximum allowed.
1% in vegetables from organic farming ( compared to 3.8 % of conventional agriculture ) were in excess pesticide composition.
In total, 131 were found pesticides in organic foods. 25 of them are not allowed for use in organic farming.
What are pesticides
They are chemical substances which protect crops by insects, weeds, rodents, bacteria and other pests. On the one hand, these substances are beneficial to the crop, does not allow to be destroyed, vegetables and cereals, and on the other hand, they allow the contamination of the crop by bacteria is not dangerous for humans.
But pesticides are themselves a danger to humans, especially sensitive categories, such as children, the chronically ill and the elderly. In recent years, the European Union seeks regulating for the use of pesticides in order to minimize the level of residues in vegetables, fruits and grains that arrive on our table.
So far it was possible to a large extent on the imposition of the pesticides used to harvest. Even so, if it complies with the rule about not exceeded the level of these vegetable substances for a combination of several pesticides in the same plate ( in a salad , for example), can be hazardous to humans.
Moreover, the European Union has imposed on all Member States to implement programs to minimize pesticide level until December 2011, because ” the risks posed by pesticide residues in fruits, vegetables and cereals are a public health problem major” points out Anne Stauffer, manager of the Alliance for Health and the Environment .
What can be
Avoid apples and other fruit or vegetable that looks flawless.
Small holes in the surface of cabbage leaves or lettuce are clear evidence that they were ” visited ” by insects, which means they have not been treated with pesticides or, if they used such chemicals, the level of pesticide residues when we consume is small.
Avoid buying fruits and vegetables whose skin is removed in places as fruit peel is one that protects itself from contamination by pesticides or other chemicals. Moreover, the shell is where is found the highest levels of pesticide residues, they warn.
Before eating fruit and vegetables all nuts, they should be washed thoroughly, sometimes special vegetable brush, but not with detergent or soap.
Let fruits and vegetables in cold water for 15 seconds after you’ve washed to minimize the level of pesticide residues. In the case of leafy vegetables such as cabbage and lettuce, carefully wash each part leaves and leaf removal from the surface.
Manifestations of pesticide poisoning
EPA (Environmental Protection Agency – EPA) in the USA has made a list of all events that may occur as a result of exposure to pesticides commonly found in vegetables and fruits. Among the most important are :
Irritation, Wheals, flushing – data symptoms, most likely, of compounds based on copper, cadmium, paraquat, diquat, sodium chlorate, phosphorus, glyphosate, sodium hypochlorite, thiram, etc. .
Hives – chlorhexidine, PCP, DEET (N , N- Diethyl – meta- toluamide )
Headaches – organophosphate, carbamate – based insecticides, nicotine, inorganic arsenic, organic mercury compounds, cadmium, thallium, borates, naphthalene, cholecalciferol, diquat.
Depression, respiratory problems, seizures and even coma – organophosphate, carbamate -based insecticides, borates, diquat
Hypertension – thallium, nicotine
Sneezing – sabadilla
Abdominal pain – organophosphate, carbamate – based insecticides, paraquat, diquat, nicotine
Anemia – naphthalene, sodium chloride, arsine, inorganic arsenic.
