The studies selected for funding in 2012 by the Multi-annual TEN- T, are part of a larger global project that aims to transform the port of Giurgiu in the first " green port on the Danube " based on integrated concepts of efficiency energy and the environment.
They will analyze the current situation of the port through a technical analysis and operational, market analysis and an environmental assessment that will be followed by studies to support the introduction of innovative technologies in port.
The new TEN- T guidelines aimed at ensuring a better integration of inland waterway transport in general network by means of multimodal crossings.
"What appears increasingly evident is the need for a real political commitment to address all aspects of inland navigation on the Danube, together with other aspects of growth: environmental impact, proper water management and economic development by structured logistics centers, especially ports, and activities that will boost local economies of the countries concerned, "notes Karla Peijs, European coordinator in a report.
According to her, maintaining safe navigation, particularly on the Danube, is and will be increasingly important in the future, as we learn from the two summer periods in 2011 and 2012, during which navigation was blocked by a severe drought for extended periods of time, causing huge losses to the industry. In such situations, the industry loses money alone but also hoping to use the Danube as a transport corridor.
