Scientists say that cigarette filters may be used as a high performance battery to power the computer.

 

When it comes to smoking, there are few who find positive sides of this vice. However, experts in green technologies in South Korea have found a benefit of cigarette - filter can be turned into a powerful battery for storing energy from renewable sources.

 

According to a paper published in the journal Nanotechnology, quoted rtcc.org, cigarette filters can be converted into a carbon-based material, high performance, one that fits perfectly for energy storage.

 

Storage devices is a great challenge in renewable energy industry because, unlike fossil fuels, wind and solar power can generate electricity only intermittently.

 

Recycling cigarette butts has a double advantage - offers a new solution to the problem of energy storage while preventing environmental pollution.

 

"Our study showed that cigarette filters can be transformed into a high performance material carbon using a simple process that simultaneously provides a green solution for meeting energy needs of society," said Professor Yi Jongheop Seoul National University, coauthor of the study.

"Many countries develop strict regulations to prevent cigarette filters trillions of toxic and non-biodegradable in the environment are removed each year. Our method is a way to do this, "says Yi.

 

Around 5,600 billion cigarette butts are discarded into the environment each year, most of them being found after cleaning the beaches. They contain chemicals that cause cancer, such as pesticides and nicotine.

 

Once fired, the cigarette is changed into a material which is composed by a number of small pores which gives the area the ability to store large amounts of energy.

 

The filters can be used to cover the electrodes supercapacitors - electrochemical components used to store large amounts of electrical power - resulting in a highly efficient battery, which may be integrated into computers, mobile phones and electrical vehicles.

 

Using cigarette filters energy storage would, of course, lower production costs.

 

After testing the idea, scientists have discovered that the material can store more energy than commercially available alternatives.
